information technology
Unsupported Campus Devices

Following a recent audit, SPU’s IT department has identified numerous devices running outdated and unsupported systems, including Windows XP, Windows 95, and older Linux versions. These systems pose severe cybersecurity risks and jeopardize the university’s compliance with federal regulations such as FERPA, HIPAA, and GLBA. To protect the network, IT staff will take necessary steps to block affected devices from internet and network access. While we understand this may cause inconvenience, these steps are necessary to safeguard university data and infrastructure, and we appreciate your cooperation when staff reach out. For questions, please contact the IT department at itsupport@spu.edu.

Windows 11 device upgrade

A message from Information Technology: As we approach the end of the fiscal year, we’re in the process of upgrading all devices to Windows 11 in preparation for Microsoft’s upcoming end of support for Windows 10 in October. For security and compliance reasons, departments with devices that are not compatible with Windows 11 will be contacted directly to coordinate the return or, where appropriate, the upgrade of the device to hardware that will support Windows 11. Our goal is to retrieve or upgrade all incompatible devices by the end of August to ensure we stay on track. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns at itsupport@spu.edu.

Professor Alberto Ferreiro
Ferreiro presents paper

Alberto Ferreiro, professor emeritus of history, attended a conference in Rome titled, "Nicaea 325, Context, Event & Reception," April 2-5, 2025. The conference was on the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, held at the Patristics Institute Augustinianum and the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum). His paper is titled: “Reception of the Council of Nicaea (325) in Suevic Gallaecia through St. Martin of Braga’s Capitula Martini.”

Abstract: The Suevic Kingdom of Hispania flourished in the province of Gallaecia from 411 to 585. For most of that time they were Catholic in faith which put them at odds with the larger Arian Visigoths, who ruled most of the rest of Hispania until the Muslim invasion of 711. The creed and the double procession of the Holy Spirit was already circulating in Hispania before the two councils of Braga met in 561 and 572. The Second Braga council is the most important in disseminating select canons of Nicaea (325) in Gallaecia. Credit goes to Bishop Martin of Braga (c. 520–c. 579) who brought them from the East; he was from the Roman province of Pannonia. The Second Council of Braga (572), met in the second year of King Miro, June 1 [Era 610], with 12 bishops attending; by then Martin of Braga had risen to Metropolitan Bishop of Braga. What sets this council apart are the 84 canons known as the "Capitula Martini" of which the majority are from Eastern councils. This study focuses on 11 canons from Nicaea that Martin selected and adapted for dissemination in the Gallaecian Church. The full title given to them is "Capitula ex Orientalium Patrum Synodis a Martino Episcopo Ordinata Atque Collecta." This study contextualizes the canons in the wider context of the rival kingdoms of the Sueves and Visigoths, proliferation of the creed in Hispania, and emergence of the Filioque formula in Hispania.
